Having been banned under the Taliban, it is currently undergoing resurgence in popularity for the thousands of men looking for some form of entertainment and escapism from the constant war.

Under the Taliban, Afghan women risked everything to be beautiful. Now the US fashion industry is helping them open their own beauty parlours and achieve financial independence.
Sima Calkin has not seen her home country of Afghanistan for 23 years. Now she is returning to advise local women about running their own beauty salons. It's all thanks to a new scheme aimed at restoring dignity and self respect to the women of Afghanistan. But the war ravaged country she flies into bears no resemblance to the lush paradise of her childhood. "I am in shock ... it's mind boggling to see what has happened," she despairs. She is also racked by guilt for having abandoned her country in its hour of need. By teaching the women to become beauticians, she hopes she can make amends. And there are plenty of women desperate to be taught these valuable new skills. Beauticians in Kabul earn much more than doctors or labourers. In a country where 60% of women are widows and many are the main breadwinners, working as beauticians offers a real opportunity to improve their lives. |

Afghanistan - Song for Pashtun Hekmatyar - destroyed Kabul
|
Kharoti Ghilzai Pashtun Gulbuddin Hekmatyar wanted to make Afghanistan a province of Pakistan and sold himself to Pakistani ISI. His godfather was Pakistani ISI. He started the civil war by wanted to make only himself prime minister and taking Kabul to make a city of Pakistan. When he failed to take the city, he accepted 300,000 rockets from Pakistani ISI and bombed Kabul to rubble and killed about 80,000 innocent Kabulis and made the city into a rubble for the next 10 years, earning him the nickname "Rocketyar". For 10 years people had to live in rubble and misery thanks to Kharoti Hekmatyar. After still failing to take Kabul after his brutal bombing campaign, he joined and helped the Pakistani supported Taliban. Rocketyar then brought al-Qaeda and Osama and turned Afghanistan into a terrorist base and as a result of 9/11 the Americans invaded. He then ran off to Pakistan and has been hiding there ever since however he is a hero to many Pashtuns like the Kharoti tribe and Ghilzai tribe. This song is dedicated to him, Hekmatyar the destroyer of Kabul city.

Inside West Kabul

Shelled mercilessly throughout the civil war, much of West Kabul still lays in ruins. But today these ruins pulse with life. Bombed out buildings host a wide range of small businesses, from bakeries to carpentry workshops, and also serve as playgrounds for children and grazing areas for herds of urban sheep. Kabul's ever-rising number of heroin addicts lurks inside a massive complex that once hosted Soviet-style governmental institutions while, out in the streets, unlicensed food stands feed Kabul's working class. A young vendor said: "Policemen do not disturb us these days but I hope they will not come after us in the future. The police must allow poor people to work." |

Norouz is a traditional new year holiday celebrated by people in Afghanistan, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kurdistan, India, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, as well as in Iranian and Turkic communities all over the world. The residents of Kabul celebrated Norouz walking to green areas around the city. On Maranjan Hill, people fly kites and dance while families stroll around leisurely. Interestingly enough, all these activities were banned under the Taliban regime. Indeed, the Taliban had also banned Norouz itself. |
