When the genocide ended, many women formed associations to rebuild their communities. Thirteen years on, these associations have redefined the role of women in Rwandan society. Forty-eight percent of MPs in Rwanda are women -- the highest proportion in the world. "Women are leading everything. We are capable of doing the job", states politician Speciose. In the aftermath of the genocide, she helped found a women's association to rebuild her village. Then they started raising funds for orphans. "After seeing how strong and brave Speciose is, she was made Mayor," explains her friend Daphrose. "Then she was elected for parliament." Women like Speciose are overturning traditional stereotypes. "We used to think the role of women was to cook food but now, women are being recognized." (FRF) |

The films tells the story of a brutal 72 hours in the life and death of the Muslim refugees in the town, which had been declared a United Nations safe area, under the protection of Dutch U.N. peacekeapers. They were taken by the Bosnian Serbs, executed in the fields, schools and warehouses in the area and buried in mass graves. Srebrenica is the Guernica of our time, and a story of the humanitarian wars being waged by the UN and NATO throughout the world. It was the worlds first "United Nations safe haven", a town the international community pledged to protect, then utterly failed to do so. The resulting massacre has been called a crime against humanity, even genocide. The fundamental theme of A Cry from the Grave" is how, at the end of the 20th century, we deal with a such a bloody crisis at the heart of Europe. Is a judicial resolution possible for such a war crime, and what can international justice offer the victims of the massacre? |

The Armenian Genocide or the Armenian Massacre — refers to the massacres and forcible removals of hundreds of thousands to over a million Armenians, during the government of the Young Turks from 1915 to 1917 in the Ottoman Empire.
Even today, the Republic of Turkey rejects the notion that the event constitutes genocide, claiming rather that the Armenian deaths were a result of inter-ethnic strife, disease and famine during the turmoil of World War I. However, most Armenian, Russian, Western, and an increasing number of Turkish, scholars believe that it was indeed the first genocide of the 20th century, or a campaign of state-sponsored ethnic cleansing and mass extermination. For example, some Western sources point to the sheer scale of the death toll as evidence for a systematic, organized plan to eliminate the Armenians. The event is also said to be the second-most studied case of genocide,[3] and often draws comparison with the Holocaust. As discussed below, to date twenty-one countries have officially recognized it as genocide.

civilizations, Armenia once included Mount Ararat, which Biblical tradition identifies as the mountain that Noah's ark rested on after the flood. It was the first country in the world to officially embrace Christianity as its religion (c. 301).
