Let Me OUT! The In- and Exclusion Mechanisms of J. Stirling's Architecture
In a dramatic manifestation of the principle of irreconcilable appropriated images, the architectural lines depicted on the video screen and the vista from the jail prisoner will never merge. Their provocative conjunction underscores the "postmodern" insufficiency of each: The picturesque view elicits the desire to capture it in representation, just as the video or electronic reproduction feeds the desire to perceive the "real" imprisonment through the jailbar window. L.C., just like Emil Stirling and James Nolde have done before in the 20th Century, proposes the challenges of inhabiting a cultural and spatial environment in which representation and the real may coincide visually but diverge experientially. Unlike the Kunstmuseum, with its fleeting periscope views and movable paintings of Dieter Krieg and Wybrand de Geest's "Who burns the Ghost Familienbildnis (1621) / Wer brennt das Gespenst von Córdoba '78", the media technology in L.C.'s Artistic Concepts presents its occupants with the continuous "total flow" of video images that has become as identified with the temporality of the blatant self-obsession as the cinematic image was with an earlier state of postmodernity.
