| Algorithms for Data Management and Migration
|
Google Tech Talks
January, 23 2008
ABSTRACT
I will describe some algorithms for addressing some fundamental optimization
problems that arise in the context of data storage and management. In the
first part of the talk we will address the following question: How should
we store data in order to effectively cope with non-uniform demand for
data? How many copies of popular data objects do we need? Where should
we store them for effective load balancing?
In the second part of the talk we will address the issue of moving
data objects quickly, to react to changing demand patterns. We will
develop approximation algorithms for these problems.
The first part of the talk is joint work with Golubchik, Khanna,Thurimella and Zhu. The second part is joint work with Kim and Wan.
Speaker: Samir Khuller
Samir Khuller received his M.S and Ph.D from Cornell University in 1989
and 1990, respectively. He spent 2 years as a Research Associate at the
Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland,
before joining the Computer Science Department in 1992, where he is a Professor
and Associate Chair in the Department of Computer Science.
His research interests are in graph algorithms, discrete optimization, and
computational geometry. He has published about 130 journal and conference
papers, and several book chapters on these topics.
He received the National Science Foundation's Career Development Award,
the Dean's Teaching Excellence Award and also a CTE-Lilly Teaching Fellowship.
In 2003, he and his students were awarded the "Best newcomer paper" award for
the ACM PODS Conference. He received the University of Maryland's
Distinguished Scholar Teacher Award in 2007. |

| Electricity use and efficiency of servers and data centers: A review of recen...
|
Google Tech Talks
December, 4 2007
The Internet economy depends on a reliable computing infrastructure. While earlier reports of information technology using vast amounts all electricity were grossly exaggerated, these facilities still use electricity, and this use is growing rapidly. Recent analysis indicates that data center electricity use in both the US and the world roughly doubled from 2000 to 2005, and this growth is expected to slow only modestly over the following five years. Growth of this magnitude represents a substantial business opportunity for technology companies. This talk will describe results of recent work analyzing trends in total data center power use and how this growth varies by major world region. It will also explore the misplaced incentives and institutional failures that impede data center efficiency investments on a large scale. Finally, it will describe business, government, and research efforts to improve efficiency in these mission critical facilities, including recent work by the Energy Star program to promote server and data center efficiency.
Speaker: Jonathan Koomey
Dr. Koomey held the MAP/Ming visiting professorship in energy and environment at Stanford University for the 2003-2004 school year, and is now a Consulting Professor at Stanford. He is also a Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), in Berkeley, California. For more than eleven years he led the End-Use Forecasting group at LBNL, which analyzes markets for efficient products and technologies for improving the energy and environmental aspects of those products. The group develops recommendations for policymakers at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy on ways to promote energy efficiency and prevent pollution. He's also a Research Affiliate of the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley. |

| Oracle Coherence Data Grid
|
Google Tech Talks
June 27, 2007
ABSTRACT
Data Grid-based infrastructures are being developed, deployed and used to achieve unlimited application scalability and continuous availability. This presentation focuses on and how it's capabilities, which includes coherent in-memory caching, dynamic data partitioning, even processing, parallel query and process execution and on how these capabilities enable achievement of these goals and more.
In this presentation we will address:
· How Coherence capabilities function, such as coherent in-memory caching, dynamic data partitioning, and parallel query and process execution, and how they enable a new generation of grid... |

| Google Developers Day US - Intro to Data APIs
|
Intro to Google Data APIs: Mashing up Google Calendar, Spreadsheets and More
Jeffery Scudder
Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. The Google Data protocol helps accomplish this by providing a common mechanism for accessing a myriad of Google services. It embraces the Atom syndication format and the Atom Publishing Protocol (APP) and uses the extension mechanisms adopted by these standards to expose services like Picasa, Google Calendar, Google Spreadsheets, Google Base, Blogger and more.
This talk will give an overview of the protocol and dive into some example applications -- including a tool to publish events from a Google Spreadsheet to Google Calendar and Google Base. Previous knowledge of HTTP and XML is beneficial.
Speaker Bio: Jeffrey Scudder works with the Google APIs and has focused on AdWords, Google Base, and Google Spreadsheets in his time at Google. He enjoys making beautiful music on all kinds of guitars and swimming in code. Jeff and his wonderful wife live in the Silicon Valley area. |
