Irrawaddy, Burma's sacred river
Burma, now known as Myanmar again, its name in the 13th century, is a land of secrets. Over the centuries, despite changing dynasties and successive invasions, the Irrawaddy, the huge river which irrigates the heartland of the biggest country in Southeast Asia, has remained the unchanging symbol of Burma's national identity. After Rangoon on the river delta, dominated by the Schwedagon, Burma's most sacred Buddhist sanctuary, we head for Bhamo. It is in this trading town 50 kilometers from the border with the Chinese province of Yunan that we board the Pandaw, a traditional Burmese boat. Day after day, we discover an incredibly beautiful country and when we stop, we see how fishermen, potters and monks live. On the way, we come across rafts made of bamboo and teak sailing downriver, or ferries packed with goods and passengers which connect the villages of Burma's central plain. After two weeks' traveling, we reach the plain of Pagan with its thousands of pagodas.
