Denise Belfon - Rude Gyal Anthem

She's now rated as One of the Caribbean's Hottest Artistes. Known to her fans as Saucy Wow for her energetic, scintillating performances, she has also earned the titles of Soca Diva and Caribbean Soca Dancehall Queen.
Her stunning stage act and music has been seen and heard by audiences throughout the Caribbean, across North America, even across the Atlantic in London, wherever the Caribbean diaspora can be found. Over the years she has also become a favourite with the US College circuit. Just plug her name into any search engine on the Internet, you are guaranteed to get over 700 hits.
With her long awaited debut album scheduled to be released in November 2004, it is without a doubt that she is poised to take the world by storm.
Indeed, the time has come to show the world what Denise 'Saucy Wow' Belfon is all about.
Denise Ann Sinoda Belfon was born on November 23, 1978 in Trinidad & Tobago. As a young girl in school, she was a football player, and was even offered a scholarship to Howard University to join the all Girls football team. However, an injury at the time prevented her from taking up the opportunity.
Denise's other love from an early age was the arts. She has been singing since the age of 9, and has also been a dancer and a model. When she was not in the spotlight, Denise taught gymnastics at the Belmont Junior Secondary school and at the YMCA.
In 1990, Denise was discovered by the bandleader of Roy Cape. She started singing professionally with the band Black Sheep, before moving on to Sound Revolution. Her first solo recording was the soca hit "Ka Ka Lay Lay".
Since then, Denise has gone on to become the most forceful female solo act in the Caribbean, having recorded a string of hit singles: Hard Wuk", "De Jammette", "Saucy Baby", and "Indian Man", that continue to draw frenzy from audiences and partygoers across the Caribbean and in the diaspora.
These songs and many others have earned Denise the rank as one of the Caribbean's top talents.
"After I started with the band Black Sheep, I was encouraged by the performances of Super Blue and Denise Plummer to pursue a solo career. I would also say that Aretha Franklin, Billie Halliday and Mahalia Jackson have been my musical influences since I started in this business. Their work has always intrigued me." |

Princess Diana's Funeral Part 19: Derry Air and Cwm Rhondda

The Archbishop finishes the Prayers and the choir sings 'An Air from County Derry':
I would be true, for there are those that trust me.
I would be pure, for there are those that care.
I would be strong, for there is much to suffer.
I would be brave, for there is much to dare.
I would be friend of all, the foe, the friendless.
I would be giving, and forget the gift,
I would be humble, for I know my weakness,
I would look up, laugh, love and live.
The Archbishop led the recitation of The Lord's Prayer. After The Lord's Prayer, The Archbishop said The Blessing.
There then followed the most beautiful piece of music, in my opinion, of the whole service: the de facto National Anthem of Wales, Cwm Rhondda, with words of the hymn 'Guide Me, O Great Redeemer':
Guide me, O thou great Redeemer,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty;
hold me with thy powerful hand:
bread of heaven,
feed me now and evermore.
Open now the crystal fountain
whence the healing stream doth flow;
let the fiery cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through:
strong deliverer,
be thou still my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside;
death of death, and hell's destruction,
land me safe on Canaan's side:
songs and praises
I will ever give to thee.
The hymn was chosen as a tribute to Diana as Princess of Wales as was the choice of Welsh soldiers as pall bearers. The BBC appropriately chose to close up on people outside with Welsh flags.
In the last verse came the indication that the most emotional part of any funeral service was about to happen...
When I first saw this nearly ten years ago as it was broadcast, both myself and my mum took as cue to let it all go in terms of tears.
The Dean of the Abbey and the Verger walk on and bow to the Altar while the Welsh Guards position themselves to take the coffin away... |
