Can Philanthropy Create Poverty? (ProteanView)

Poverty is relevant and relative. It's about perception... within reason, anyhow. Disparity causes poverty to 'dawn on' us. Our tunnel vision forces us to see charity on an individual basis. By broadening that scope, we *might* find that our help does more damage than good on a society at large. Not everyone defines hardship the way we define it. Not everyone wants to be like the West. If I'd never tasted chocolate & you hand a piece to me, I will take it, like it and be happy... but it's not good for me. proteanview

Amitabha Sadangi, an uncommon hero tackling poverty in India

Meet Amitabha Sadangi, a businessman who gave up wealth and fortune to tackle irrigation and poverty in India. Amitabha Sadangi's vision is to empower the rural poor with affordable, sustainable agricultural technologies. He has been a leader in creating an Indian strategy and organization to disseminate technologies developed by International Development Enterprises (India). Foot treadle irrigation pumps and low-cost drip systems introduced by IDE (India) have helped 400,000 families double their income, a net gain of more than $40 million per year. A signature element of the IDE (India) strategy is a "supply chain" of local manufacturers, distributors and installers who earn $1 million annually. IDE (India) has sold irrigation systems to the poorest families for as little as $1, enabling them to have more food and earn more money and, thus, afford better health care and education. Learn about his story in this episode of Uncommon Heroes, funded by the Skoll Foundation. More information at www.skollfoundation.org.

Fighting Poverty with Education - profile of Martin Burt

Even one individual can make a difference in the fight against poverty. In one of the poorest countries in Latin America, the non-profit founded by Martin Burt has been making a difference for over twenty years, helping poor people to work their own way out of poverty. He's now using a pionnering approach to transform poor youth into rural entrepreneurs. It's not just teaching them farming, but how to make money out of farming. And because the students learn through running business which make the school money, the whole iniative can be financially sustainable - i.e. it won't have to rely on the government or charity for funding. This avoids an important problem in many efforts to relieve poverty, and ensures the benefits can be felt year after year after year. Visit www.teachamantofish.org.uk for more on this approach or to make a donation support our work.
